Rhythm games are, quite simply put, insanely popular. Take the simple intuitive mechanic of “dance with good timing” that just about any human being with ears and legs can pick up and play, and you’ve got a huge demographic to aim your game at. Singing games have traditionally been more of a niche affair, but the audience is definitely out there. EA’s decided to combine the two into the all-singing all-dancing game Boogie for the Wii.
Boogie is, as I said previously, a more freeform style game that combines both dancing and singing gameplay. You can choose to, well, sing or dance depending on your preference. The movements are controlled by your motions with the Wii controller, and the buttons will cause stylistic changes. It’s fun and intuitive, which is crucial for games like this. The microphone peripheral, which should ship with the game, allows you to get your voice in the game in a few different ways. It’ll measure pitch, timing and phrasing to make sure you’re singing the right words at the right time in the right key. You can choose to hear your own voice over the music, hear a professional singer’s voice, or choose a mode that will fade in the professional only when you sing on-key, which sounds like the method of choice for those of us who aren’t exactly Idol quality singers.
There’s multiplayer, of course. You can dance against a singer or vice versa, or go head to head in dance mode. Another cool feature comes in the form of a video editor that allows you to save and re-watch your best performances at a later date. The Wii’s already infamous for inviting new people to play games, and with games like Boogie on the horizon there seem sot be no sign of slowing. The final game comes out in only a few weeks, so be sure to check back at Game Almighty for more info soon.
