Once I had finally grasped that concept, my mind was able to appreciate the game as much more than just a Wii Sports clone with an expanded games roster. But the games roster is nothing to balk at either. When I asked them what was behind the decision to select ten and what motivated the choices they made, I got an interesting answer. They were originally planning on incorporating more than ten, but a recent development surrounding the console influenced them to hold of on the other titles for use in the sequel. Since the games I saw already took great advantage of movement and the Wiimote, I had to press my luck and ask them if they were referring to the Wii Fit board. With a light in their eyes and big grins all around they responded with the obligatory "no comment".
As to the choice of sports that did make it into the title, they explained that they choose them based on the breadth of their appeal across the different markets they planned on publishing the game in - North America, Europe, and Asia. But don't think that their intentions to sell the game to our Canadian neighbors is the only reason you'll find Figure Skating and Curling on the list. At the end of our play session, the Hudson team made an admission that allowed myself and the other journalists to breathe a sigh of relief.
Those were their favorite out of the collection of ten too! Since it is a little hard (and embarrassing) to explain in writing, you'll have to take my word for it. Not only were all of the other titles a blast to play, but somehow Hudson leveraged the strategic depth and need for skill into Curling and Figure Skating in such a way that I expect Deca Sports will have even more appeal to both serious single players and casual group players than Wii Sports enjoyed.
Fortunately you'll only have to wait till May to see if I am right.
