Halo 3 was, in its first week, the highest-selling week for any video game prior, taking in $300 million in profits and blamed at the time for low movie ticket sales. Now the same is being said of Grand Theft Auto’s effect on Ironman’s ticket sales, but does Hollywood really have reason to fear video games? That remains to be seen, and one of the indicators may be sales of the Ironman video game.
Traditionally movies rarely make more than 5% of their total profits after the first week of release, especially now with the average sale price of DVDs hovering around $15. Video games on the other hand, are often bought long after an opening weekend and their price rarely drops below $20. Experts are saying that there will be another surge of GTA 4 sales over the summer – and even into next Christmas, long after the Ironman movie has left theaters. Whether or not Ironman: The Director’s Cut will be in bargain bins already by then we don’t know, but you can be fairly certain the people over at Rockstar will still be smoking hundred dollar bills as the new kings of the most lucrative of all forms of media.
