With all of the chaos going on in the Take-Two boardroom, it's easy to lose sight of the other big announcement from Take-Two and its Rockstar subsidiary. For more than a month, Rockstar has been building hype and anticipation, including purchasing 30 minutes of late night ad time on FX showing nothing more than the countdown ticker. The ticker was counting down to the first trailer for Rockstar's latest addition to the Grand Theft Auto franchise. Now that trailer is available for all to see.
Based on the video, it looks like the first next-gen Grand Theft Auto game will take place in New York City, or at least a reasonable replica complete with its own Statue of Liberty. Scattered about are signs of GTA's unique tongue-in-cheek humor, including billboards advertising things like "America's Next Top Hooker" and the Libery Treenewspaper, which gives people "Yesterday's news Today". After showing a series of environment shots, viewers get to see the game's new lead.
The new character, apparently of Russian descent, narrates the only lines in this trailer, "Life is complicated. I killed people. Smuggled people. Sold people. Perhaps here, things will be different."
Grand Theft Auto IV, according to Rockstar, will be in stores on October 16th. And while the game currently carries the standard "RP – Rating Pending" by the ESRB, it's a safe bet this game won't be for the kiddies.
